Christmas is a-coming  4

Breaking news: I actually ventured into the outside world today and went shopping! I am currently recovering from my ordeal with a good cup of coffee to drink and a cocker spaniel to stroke.

Mum, my nephew and his mate hailed a taxi and made the arduous nine minute journey into Kidderminster town centre where we bought things, spoke to people, ate food, drank coffee and generally did stuff. The things we bought were expensive, the food tasted crap and the coffee was bitter, but the people were nice.

I saw a guy I used to work with whom I hadn’t seen for a couple of years - we had a quick chat about life, the universe and everything (we talk fast) and then parted company with a smile and a wave. Okay, just a smile.

I bought a few items I was short of that are difficult and/or costly to buy online and made some enquiries into photography related services. To be more specific about the last item: I wanted to know if it’s possible to transfer photos from an APS film that has already been developed onto a CD-ROM - my nephew kindly went into the shop to ask for me (it wasn’t the largest shop in the world and had I entered there would’ve been more than a few injured ankles) and came back with the answer I was hoping for.

Speaking of photography, I bought myself an early Christmas present: a Canon Ixus i7 Zoom. It’s a superb little thing with more bells and whistles than I might possibly need but and determined to get the hang of. That said, it seems to be a shallow learning curve as the menu navigation and mode selection process is near-identical to my original Canon Ixus i. The main major bonuses for me with this new toy are bigger and better movie mode (640x480 pixels at 30 frames-per-second as opposed to 320x240 at 15fps), optical zoom and some kind of “face detection” jiggery-pokery (over two thirds of my photos are of people).

I’ve slowly been uploading all of my saved photos to my Flickr account as a form of backup and to allow friends and family access. All of the people shots are being set with friends-only and/or family-only privacy settings so if you happen to be one or the other then feel free to open your own Flickr account (they do free ones), add me as a contact and I’ll give you appropriate access. Of course, everyone has access to pictures of me or Rocco

I wasn’t happy with my shopping trip today, either. Not sure it was for any particular reason; maybe I was just in a bad mood! I didn’t expect to be in a bad mood, but I wasn’t reacting all that well to stuff, so I guess that’s a fair clue… But your Christmas present to yourself sounds nice! I have a Canon too, though not that one. - Diddums

PS I like the snowy ‘winter wood’ effect along the top! Clever. Did you get the November Snow wallpaper from Digital Blasphemy? - Diddums

Which Canon do you have? Mine is very nice! Yes, I got the wallpaper from Digital Blasphemy - I also got the autumn, spring and summer ones, too, and will be using them when the appropriate season arrives. - Timmargh

Canon 350D. Depth of field in auto is very shallow but I should study the manual - I’m sure there are ways round it. Already tried a few shots with narrower aperture but then forgot how I did it! My wallpapers for now are from my Christmas folder - I’m currently on Ice-olation (can’t remember where I got it from - beautiful). Oh - it’s from Visual Paradox. http://visualparadox.com/wallpapers/ice-olation1600.htm - Diddums
