Rotoflex-o-rama!  13

I’ve mentioned my new bed on more than one occasion on here (what do you mean I haven’t shut up about it?) so I thought it was time to take a few pictures to show you its loveliness. Unfortunately, because of its size and where it is in my room (i.e. the middle) I couldn’t get back far enough to get it all in one frame, and my attempts at a panoramic shot failed miserably. So, what’s a man to do? Why, of course: video it!

Please excuse the quality of the video (my little Canon Ixus i only films at 320x240) and there’s no sound. I’ve saved in it QuickTime format using the H.264 codec and it’s about 2 megabytes in size:

Rotoflex movie still

You need to download QuickTime to view it if you haven’t already got it installed or, if you’d rather not do that, I have saved an MPEG version.

Now that is what I call a bed!!! Tell me Tim, with all the tracks on the ceiling and the 90º thingy for pivoting space, it must take a big room to fit the whole kit in it? What are the minimal sizes for the bedroom so it can take all this kit? - MHC

My room’s about an average size - not sure exactly without measuring. The track was cut to size to fit the room. As for the bed: it’s about 6 inches longer than a standard bed and needs about 3 feet on the side your feet turn to and 12 inches on the other side. - Timmargh

Hi Tim, I already have QuickTime, and also Windows Media Player which runs MPEG files by default, but I can’t get your epic to play. It just locks up my machine, in fact. Over to you, Mr de Mille! - charlesdawson

Charles: try this version. Edit: I’ve redone the main video clip using a different compressor. - Timmargh

Thanks very much, Tim. Admittedly the camera work was somewhat reminiscent of The Blair Witch Project (without all the twigs) but I am sure that, given a performance from Sharon Stone, it would have a good chance at the Oscars this year. Now can we have a video of Rocco please? - charlesdawson

You can see an old video of Rocco in an earlier entry - I’m currently sorting through all the videos I have of him so I can make another small compilation-type clip. - Timmargh

Great pics, I didn’t risk the movie though. Wish I could have a dog but they trigger my asthma badly. Long may he live to chew sausages! - charlesdawson

Charles: I re-encoded the movie using the same compressor as I did when I re-did the bed movie, so if the the bed one worked okay then I’m hoping Rocco’s will too. - Timmargh

Works fine, thanks Tim. - charlesdawson

Mental note: always the Sorenson Video codec in future. - Timmargh

Hi, your beds amazing. My Nan (who’s 90)had one too and was a whizz with the handset (but unfortunately she died last week after only having 7 weeks use of her bed). She wishes she had bought it years ago as she no-longer had to wait for someone to help her in & out of bed and did’nt get bruises anymore as she no-longer needed help from carers. Anyway, I tried to download you some of the full pictures of the bed that I have used in my online for sale advert but could’nt as I am not good on the computer as you are. - Tobias

Hi Tobias! I’m sorry to hear about your Nan - it’s shame she only got to use her bed so briefly. I wish I’d got mine years ago, too, but I think they’ve only been making them for about a year and a half. If you want you can email some pictures - just click on "Contact" at the top of the page to get my address. - Timmargh

I’m still trying to get over my nan’s death and im only 13 and she passed away in 2000 i just dont want to do anything and i cant even do to her grve because it is a too long drive and my dada sis took all the pic’s of my nan so i dont even have a pic of her i was rele close to her (I MISS U NAN!!!) - Elizabeth
